but newspapers printed articles alleged rape; rumors spread in white community it, including tusken dying injuries. evening mob of men estimated between 1,000 , 10,000 formed outside duluth city jail. duluth commissioner of public safety, william f. murnian, ordered police not use guns protect prisoners. mob used heavy timbers, bricks , rails break down doors , windows, pulling 6 black men cells. mob seized elias clayton, elmer jackson , isaac mcghie. took them out , convicted them of tusken s rape in sham trial. mob took 3 men 1 block 1st street , 2nd avenue east, beat them , hanged them.
the next day minnesota national guard arrived @ duluth secure area , guard surviving prisoners, 10 additional black suspects whom police had arrested circus @ next stop. moved under heavy guard st. louis county jail.
