15 may – in middle of franklin dam dispute, labor government of harry holgate voted out in tasmania & replaced liberal party, led robin gray.

18 june - south australian government passes legislation authorising development of roxby downs copper-uranium deposit, despite controversy on issue.
21 june - queensland art gallery within queensland cultural centre opened. cost had blown out original estimate of $10 million $28 million.

the fourth interim report of costigan royal commission ships painters , dockers union begins series of revelations tax fraud implicates senior public servants , members of liberal party. report highlights tax-avoidance schemes, including bottom of harbour plans. resulting furore ends speculation election.
the strike in queensland ends when unions capitulate before government s adamant attitude on issue.
