victor channing sanborn born in concord, massachusetts louisa leavitt , franklin benjamin sanborn, , named in honor of poet ellery channing. prepared college in public schools of concord, graduating high school @ age of sixteen, due poor health prevented entering harvard college planned. in 1885, however, spent term unmatriculated student @ cornell university.

professional life

on january 1, 1886, victor sanborn began office work in omaha, nebraska, burlington & missouri railroad under auditor of freight , passenger account. after few months promoted passenger department, , 2 years served secretary p.s. eustis, general passenger agent. in 1888, eustis transferred chicago take charge of passenger department of chicago, burlington & quincy railroad, , sanborn went him secretary. 2 years later, victor sanborn promoted assistant clerk, , 2 years after chief clerk. resigned january 1, 1898, , engaged in real estate business in chicago, entering office of clarance a. burley. attorney involved in real estate, clarence burley s goal re-build chicago following great fire, having watched family-home burn. burley , sanborn partners in real estate venture. although sanborn remained engaged in business of real estate remainder of life agent kenilworth company, received father interest in genealogy.

the sanborn genealogical association formed in 1853 purpose of compiling family history. recording secretary, dr. nathan sanborn, first published research in 1856 in new england historic genealogical register. article, published in pamphlet form, 1 of earliest american genealogies printed. dr. sanborn died in 1858 , records given sga s president, dyer h. sanborn, continued research , extensive correspondence until death in 1871. v.c. sanborn became interested in continuing research. age of seventeen, sanborn had searched hampton falls , exeter, new hampshire records, laying foundation book on samborne - sanborn genealogy in article new england historical , genealogical register of july 1885, when eighteen. first edition of book, genealogy of family of samborne or sanborn in england , america, 1194-1898, published in 1887 when sanborn twenty years old, receiving favorable reviews beginning, including 1 in nation stating, 1 of stupendous volumes peculiar country, without parallel elsewhere.

personal life

on may 28, 1891, sanborn married louise wilkinson kirkland, daughter of author joseph kirkland , granddaughter of author caroline kirkland; remained in chicago area, building home in kenilworth, illinois in 1900. couple volunteered actively in local concerns, victor serving president of village , president of kenilworth club, , louise kenilworth historical society president. sanborns had @ least 1 son died in infancy , 2 daughters survived through adulthood. victor channing sanborn died january 13, 1921 of pneumonia, following short illness. fifty-three years old. seems while there grave markers victor , louise in sleepy hollow cemetery, concord, these memorials , location of true burial graceland cemetery in chicago.
