the first railway line in iberian peninsula built in 1848 between barcelona , mataró. in 1851 madrid-aranjuez line opened. in 1852 first narrow gauge line built; in 1863 line reached portuguese border. 1864 madrid-irun line had been opened, , french border reached.


in 1900 first line electrified la poveda-madrid.


in 1941 renfe created.


the last steam locomotive withdrawn in 1975, in 1986 maximum speed on railways raised 160 km/h, , in 1992 madrid-seville high-speed line opened, beginning process of building nationwide high-speed network.


the current plans of spanish government plans link provincial capitals high-speed rail, total estimated length of on 9000 km of high-speed railways 2020.
