the a-series sets built electrification of perth’s suburban railway system in 1990s , joondalup line, being constructed in same period. first delivered on 1 september 1990. original order 43 first-generation trains followed additional order 5 second-generation trains due joondalup line exceeding passenger estimates. delivered in 1998, second-generation trains differ in having led screens , other upgrades security , accessibility. a-series sets can coupled form 4 or 6 carriage sets.
