togo
in response death of gnassingbé eyadéma, president of togo, on 5 february 2005, au leaders described naming of son faure gnassingbé successor military coup. togo s constitution calls speaker of parliament succeed president in event of death. law, parliament speaker must call national elections choose new president within sixty days. au s protest forced gnassingbé hold elections. under heavy allegations of election fraud, officially elected president on 4 may 2005.
mauritania
on 3 august 2005, coup in mauritania led african union suspend country organisational activities. military council took control of mauritania promised hold elections within 2 years. these held in 2007, first time country had held elections agreed of acceptable standard. following elections, mauritania s membership of au restored. however, on 6 august 2008, fresh coup overthrew government elected in 2007. au once again suspended mauritania continental body.
mali
in march 2012, military coup staged in mali, when alliance of touareg , islamist forces conquered north, resulting in coming power of islamists. after military intervention french troops, region in control of malian army. reinstall local authorities, au helped form caretaker government, supporting , holding presidential elections in mali in july 2013.
