2006–09: career
khatri made international debut in 2006 asian cadets championship, won silver medal. @ age of 18, while still being junior wrestler, competed in 53rd edition of senior national wrestling championships in 2008. , became national champion after defeating anil mann in final of 96 kg freestyle event, although not defend title in next year – finishing bronze medal. made international debut @ senior level in 2009 asian wrestling championships, finishing eighth.
in 2009 asian junior championship, lost in quarter-final eventual champion, gave him chance win bronze medal via repechage. however, khatri lost bronze medal bout kazakhstan s izmagambetov gani. next participated in 2009 world junior wrestling championship, lost in second round germany s johannes kessel.
although khatri won gold medal @ shaheed bhagat singh international wrestling tournament in november 2009, first major success @ senior level came 1 month later when became commonwealth champion after defeating pakistan’s mohammad umar in final.
2010: podium finish @ asiad
in september 2010, during selection trails commonwealth games @ national camp, several athletes, including khatri, tested positive methylhexaneamine, drug banned world anti-doping agency (wada) in 2010 itself. resulted in removal commonwealth games squad. however, due declassification of methylhexaneamine banned drug in september of same year, provisionally banned athletes allowed compete in future tournaments. nevertheless, hearing proposed ban kept going tested positive aforementioned drug during period when classified banned stimulant. after getting temporary reprieve, participated in 44th edition of india wrestling championship, won hind kesari title after defeating delhi s nardener.
khatri’s campaign @ 2010 asian games began on poor note lost kazakhstan’s taimuraz tigiyev in opening bout. however, disqualification of tigiyev in quarter-final bout against eventual gold medallist gave khatri chance of podium finish through repechage. in first repechage bout, defeated syria’s raja al-karrad , in next bout, decide bronze medal winner, secured victory against korea’s kim jae-gang.
2011: second commonwealth championships title
mausam began 2011 season 34th national games. representing haryana, won gold medal in 96 kg freestyle event after defeating jharkhand s narendra in final. in asian championships, after getting bye in first round, lost eventual finalist erfan amiri (pl) in second round. , lost bronze medal repechage bout against mongolia s natsagsürengiin zolboo. in 2011 commonwealth wrestling championships, held in melbourne, khatri able defend title after winning final bout against countryman varun kumar. participating in career s first senior level world championships, khatri registered victories against leon rattigan , harutyun yenokyan in first 2 rounds. however, lost slovakia s jozef jaloviar in pre-quarter-final.
2012–15: doping ban , comeback
in first attempt qualify 2012 summer olympics, participated in asian og qualifying tournament in march 2012, lost dorjkhandyn khüderbulga in quarter-final. in next month, participating in world og qualifying tournament, failed in last bid olympic qualification after losing in pre-quarter-final.
after extended hearing anti-doping violation, continued since september 2010, khatri banned 2 years in november 2012. however, khatri appealed against decision. and, after hearing, appellate body of national anti-doping agency (nada) reduced ban duration 9 months citing 314 days of delay in proceedings before disciplinary panel not attributable athletes . ending ban in february 2014.
after end of ban, khatri made comeback @ international circuit participating in 2015 asian wrestling championships, reached quarter-final before losing japan s takeshi yamaguchi 6–10. in next tournament – torneo citta sassari – finished gold medal after defeating canada s ali al-rekabi (es) in final. part of indian team finished fourth in president cup of kazakhstan after losing kazakhstan in bronze medal play off 5–3. in play off, lost mamed İbragimov 6–7.
in 2015 world wrestling championships, lost russia s abdusalam gadisov in second round. opponent s entry final gave him chance win bronze medal via repechage. however, lost germany s stefan kehrer 5–6 in repechage bout, thereby ending campaign. inaugural edition of pro wrestling league took place in december , team punjab royals bid khatri. team finished third in league. @ 2015 senior national wrestling championships, khatri finished silver medal after losing satyawart kadian in final.
2016: gold @ south asian games
representing india @ 2016 south asian games, held @ guwahati, won gold medal defeating afghanistan s rajab naseri in final. however, stint @ asian championships proved short-lived lost japan s koki yamamoto 6–10 in qualification round, finishing ninth in tournament.
in march, khatri participated in inaugural edition of bharat kesri dangal, offered biggest ever cash award among domestic wrestling tournaments – carrying prize of ₹1 crore (us$160,000) winner. tournament, held @ gurgaon s tau devi lal stadium, saw participation of country s top heavyweight wrestlers. won title defeating en route 1 of strong title contenders satyawart kadian in semifinal.
vying book olympic spot india in 97 kg category, participated in 2016 world qualification tournament. after securing victory against nikolaos papaoikonomou 10–0 in round of 16, defeated germany s erik thiele 8–4 in quarter-final. in semifinal, lost mongolia s dorjkhandyn khüderbulga 6–8. , thereby missed qualification reaching final prerequisite.
