1924 rose bowl









the first bowl game midshipmen participated in came @ conclusion of 1923 college football season, when given bid play in tenth edition of rose bowl game. midshipmen, led coach bob folwell, finished regular season 5 wins, 1 loss, , 2 ties (5-1-2). lone loss came @ hands of penn state nittany lions, falling 21-3. 1 of midshipmen s 2 ties came in army–navy game. navy s opponents in rose bowl washington huskies, came in record of ten wins , 1 loss (10-1).


the game kicked off on january 1, 1924 in rose bowl amidst tournament of roses parade. first quarter went scoreless, midshipmen scored twice during second quarter: on pass quarterback ira mckee , short run mckee. huskies scored once on long run running george wildcat wilson. midshipmen relied heavily on passing plays, while huskies relied on running game first half.


the third quarter went scoreless. midshipmen controlled huskies during of fourth quarter, until fumbled ball on own 10-yard line. washington scored on trick play midshipmen 12-yard line, tying game. midshipmen tried score, turned ball on @ midfield. washington took ball down navy 20-yard line, unable score again. huskies missed last-second field goal, , game ended 14-14 tie.


1955 sugar bowl








the 1955 sugar bowl took place on january 1 – 31 years after navy s first bowl game – following conclusion of 1954 college football season. midshipmen finished regular season 7-2 record, 2 losses coming fewer 7 points. team entered game ranked fifth in nation ap poll , united press international (upi) poll. midshipmen faced sixth-ranked ole miss rebels, who, record of 10-1, southeastern conference (sec) champions.

navy controlled third quarter running ball repeatedly. on fourth down conversion attempt ole miss 16-yard line, midshipmen kicker john weaver caught pass quarterback george welsh in of end zone, giving navy 14-point lead. midshipmen stopped rebels on next drive, rebels quarterback eagle day punted ball 72 yards midshipmen 7-yard line. midshipmen drove down field in 3 plays, , gattuso ran ball in touchdown 2 yards out. midshipmen defense shut out rebels offense during fourth quarter. end of game, rebels had gained 121 yards of total offense, compared midshipmen s 442.


1958 cotton bowl classic








the 1958 cotton bowl classic played between navy midshipmen , rice owls on january 1, 1958. coming game, navy s record 8-1-1 under head coach eddie erdelatz; rice s 7-3 under coach jess neely. game bowl year feature 2 of nation s top ten teams: navy ranked fifth in nation, while rice eighth. approximately 75,500 spectators attended game.


the game expected contest between quarterbacks tom forrestal (navy) , king hill (rice), both of whom had been named 1957 college football all-america team. after hill struggled early, however, replaced frank ryan on team s third possession. end of first half, owls had managed 1 first down, , midshipmen led 13-0. midshipmen extended lead 20-0 in third quarter before rice scored touchdown following interception. game ended in 20-7 navy victory; owls first ever postseason loss. navy s tom forrestal , tony stremic named game s mvps. both forrestal , ryan broke previous bowl record completions, set previous year chuck curtis, 13 each.



1961 orange bowl









among 71,218 attendees 1961 orange bowl newly elected president john f. kennedy. game featured fifth-ranked missouri tigers, champions of big 8 conference, , fourth-ranked navy midshipmen. contest became defensive battle in first quarter: navy defensive greg mather scored first midshipmen after intercepting lateral pass , running 98 yards touchdown. 2 drives later, missouri s norm beal intercepted pass , ran 90 yards touchdown, making score 7–6 @ end of first quarter. first offensive points of game came when missouri quarterback ron taylor ran in touchdown in second quarter. halfback joe bellino, had won heisman trophy earlier year, held 4 yards of rushing game, although did score touchdown on pass intended receiver late in game. navy finished game 4 interceptions, while missouri fumbled ball 5 times, losing possession 3 times.



1964 cotton bowl classic









the 1964 cotton bowl played between second-ranked navy midshipmen , first-ranked texas longhorns. navy 9-1-0 , led heisman trophy winner roger staubach. texas 10-0-0 , ap national champion (the ap poll did not publish polls after bowls @ time, texas season-ending ap #1 regardless of outcome of game). game took place on january 1, 1964. texas defeated navy score of 28-6. attendance approximately 75,300. game s mvp s texas scott appleton , duke carlisle. navy coached wayne hardin , texas darrell royal first time cotton bowl hosted both #1 , #2 teams in nation. second #1 vs #2 bowl game in college football history, first being 1963 rose bowl.

after playing first half saw both teams combine ncaa bowl game record 68 points, navy defeated california bears keeping them field goal in second half. midshipmen quarterback chris mccoy completed 9 of 13 passes 277 yards, setting ncaa bowl game records yards per pass attempt (21.3) , yards per completion (30.8).

2004 emerald bowl









the midshipmen entered emerald bowl 9-2 record, best win-loss record since 1963 season. against new mexico lobos, team jumped 21-7 lead. in third quarter, midshipmen began drive comprise 26 plays , use 15 minutes of game time, setting new ncaa record longest drive in college football game. midshipmen won game score of 34-19, giving team 10 wins season first time since 1905 season. result of win, midshipmen finished season ranked 24th in both associated press , usa today coaches poll. game s attendance of 28,856, increase of 28 percent on previous year, set emerald bowl record.



2005 poinsettia bowl









the inaugural edition of poinsettia bowl played between navy midshipmen , colorado state rams. navy s record 8-3, while colorado state s 6-5. game took place on december 22, 2005, , midshipmen defeated rams 51-30. attendance 36,842. midshipmen reggie campbell, tied ncaa record points scored in bowl game 30, received game s offensive mvp award. navy s tyler tidwell won defensive mvp award. navy coached paul johnson , sonny lubick led colorado state.

the 2007 poinsettia bowl played between navy midshipmen , utah utes. navy had record of 8-4. utah had record of 8-4. game took place on december 20, 2007. utah defeated navy 35-32. attendance 39, 129. game s mvp utah s brian johnson. navy coached ken niumatalolo. utah kyle whittingham.
