two strong aftershocks reported on october 22, 1886, , on november 5. first of these felt (intensity vi) in charleston, @ atlanta , augusta, georgia, , @ other towns. second shock intensity vii in summerville. received significant damage august 31 earthquake. tremor caused intensity vi effects on november 5 in charleston , felt on same area previous aftershocks. total felt area covered approximately 78,000 square kilometers (30,000 sq mi).

moderate earthquakes awakened many residents (intensity v) @ anderson on october 20, 1958, , caused minor damage (cracked , fallen plaster - intensity v) @ chesterfield on october 26, 1959. shock on april 20, 1964, felt (intensity v) @ gaston , jenkinsville. places in fairfield, florence, lexington, , richland counties reported tremors. several windows broken in bowman , orangeburg (intensity v) magnitude 3.4 earthquake on may 19, 1971. 2 small shocks, 3 hours apart, felt in western south carolina july 13, 1971. main shock @ 7:42 a.m. edt felt on approximately 5,200 square kilometers, including 2 places in georgia. tremor felt in newry; many frightened loud earth noises (intensity vi), hanging objects swung violently, , furniture shifted.

on monday, november 11, 2002, areas near seabrook island, south carolina experienced magnitude 4.4 earthquake. earthquake occurred @ depth of 3.1 miles (5.0 km), 16 miles southeast of seabrook island @ 32 degress 22.0 minutes north (32.366n), 80 degress. 4.4 minutes west (80.073w). there no reports of damage or injuries.
