dowrich (anciently dowrish) historic estate in parish of sandford. between 12th century , 1717 seat of ancient gentry family of dowrish (originally de dowrish) took name estate had become established before reign of king john (1199-1216), when built castle keep on site. 15th century gatehouse survives there today, next ancient mansion house. arms of dowrish family were: argent bend cotised sable bordure engrailed of last. elaborate monumental brass survives in sandford church wife of walter dowrish, namely mary carew (1550-1604), daughter of dr. george carew, dean of windsor, 3rd son of sir edmund carew, baron carew, of mohuns ottery in parish of luppitt, devon, , sister of george carew, 1st earl of totnes (1555-1629).
