rampant corruption, oppressive secret police, , autocratic rule made pahlavi shah less , less popular. attempts modernize iran , break power of shi clergy antagonized religious leaders , devout iranians. in 1979, loose alliance of students, parties both left , right, , shi islamists forced shah power. shi clergy seize power , establish theocratic islamic republic.


following revolution there several regional uprisings. khuzestan hit wave of unrest led arabs demanding both autonomy , end discrimination. uprising suppressed iranian security forces, more hundred dead on both sides.
