on march 8, circulation observed southeast of diego garcia , undergoing tropical cyclogenesis. next day, satellite imagery indicated tropical storm had formed 635 km (395 mi) south of island, given name honorinina. on march 9, météo france office in réunion (mfr) began tracking storm in database, , joint typhoon warning center (jtwc) began classifying tropical cyclone 25s. nascent tropical storm moved west-southwest, gradually intensifying. on march 11, jtwc upgraded honorinina equivalent of minimal hurricane 1 minute maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph). on next day, mfr followed suit upgrading storm tropical cyclone status while passing 175 km (110 mi) north of st. brandon island.

after trough passed eastward, ridge developed south of honorinina, reinforced southwest track toward madagascar. on march 13, mfr estimated cyclone attained peak 10 minute winds of 150 km/h (95 mph), while jtwc estimated peak 1 minute winds of 205 km/h (125 mph). mfr estimated storm producing gusts of 228 km/h (142 mph). while near peak intensity, honorinina passed 25 km (15 mph) south of tromelin island, , subsequently gradually weakened. on march 15, cyclone made landfall on eastern madagascar 40 km (25 mi) north of toamasina. winds @ landfall estimated @ 135 km/h (85 mph), , barometric pressure of 971.2 mbar (28.68 inhg) reported @ toamasina. rapidly weakened tropical depression status on land, , jtwc discontinued advisories on march 16. circulation continued southwestward through island, emerging mozambique channel on next day. thereafter, honorinina restrengthened on open waters. however, mfr declared storm extratropical on march 18, based on satellite appearance. jtwc again issued advisories on next day, discontinue them on march 20. meanwhile, mfr tracked cyclone turning south , southeast south of madagascar. on march 22, honorinina turned south , dissipated within westerlies.
