the agreement establishing allied cemeteries signed on 20 november 1920, greek governor-general of thessaloniki, anastasios adossides, , allies vojvoda Živojin mišić (serbia), general jean noël boucher (france), field marshal george francis milne (england) , colonel curgio giamberini (italy). greek government bought land cemetery created , ceded allies in usufruct, while maintenance of cemeteries left governments.

the project began in 1926, when savo mihailović appointed head group tasked collect remains of warriors scattered across wide area battle raged on salonika front. visited on 250 cemeteries find allied soldier graves , move them new cemetery space.

the conceptual design of serbian military cemetery selected same year in contest, , design of architect aleksandar vasić chosen , further elaborated nikolaj krasnov. materials construction of cemetery came serbia, first processed. therefore, preparations start of construction lasted until 1933 because of need prepare large quantities of trimmed stone construction of mausoleum, chapel , charnel house, , 2000 marble crosses.

finishing work began in 1933 under direction of architect budimir hristodulo, 1 of 1300 corporals. concluded @ end of 1936, , on 11 november 1936, on armistice day of world war i, mausoleum, chapel , crypt officially sanctified. greece gave free land build complex of 70,000 m², , material , work on cemetery released customs , exempted tax.

stone momin kamen quarry, located near village of džep in serbia used building mausoleum , crosses, granite kadina luka near ljig used slabs, , cement beočin. cypress trees, delivered young seedlings hilandar, planted around serbian part of cemetery. mosaic in chapel, incorporates motifs medieval serbian frescoes, work of greek artist voila.

during world war ii, burden of preserving cemetery fell onto guard Đuro mihailović. in spite of war, teen managed preserve cemetery , prevent nazi looting of books , relics.

thanks efforts of secretariat culture of serbia, funds restoration of cemetery collected. works carried out 25 september 22 october 1969, , apart renovation of vast complex, sidewalk built in front of entrance cemetery, , iron inscription saying serbian military cemetery placed on front gate.
