after end of peninsular war village grew around site of old lines, within municipality of nearby town of san roque. grew rapidly, basing economy on fishing, agriculture , trade nearby gibraltar. in july 1870 incorporated separate municipality named la línea de la concepción, after virgin of immaculate conception, regarded patroness of spanish army @ time.


a few remnants of lines still visible. ruins of fort of santa bárbara have been excavated, , substantial fragments of fort s foundations can seen within small park. remains of fort of san felipe have been uncovered.
