in 1977, military transport aviation command named after colombian aviation pioneer, honorary brigadier general camilo daza alvarez. in order expand capacity troop , cargo transportation in support of surface forces, in fight against subversion , drug trafficking, air force acquired new c-130 hercules aircraft been used security purposes humanitarian assistance. between 1990 , 1991 base received u.s. government 6 c-130b aircraft support operations combat drug trafficking , guerrillas.


in 1996 base opened new ground accesses through area devoted military transport aviation command. narrow street impeded entrance , exit of vehicles replaced dual carriageway , tunnel allows access vehicular traffic passing below airplane access ramp runway number 2 of el dorado international airport. parking lot enlarged serve 260 vehicles. base hosts colombian air force museum, has planes in display represent various types used in service during 85 years history of force.


in 2003 nvg equipment night vision air operations installed in hercules c-130 , cn-235 nurtanio airplanes. increased operational , support capacity of base given ground army force, allowing transportation, parachuting , aeromedical evacuation on combat runways lacking illumination. in way colombian air force doubled operating capacity @ base, since works 24 hours day.
