radio broadcasting initiated in 1927 became state responsibility in 1930. in 1937 given name india radio , since 1957 has been called akashvani. limited duration of television programming began in 1959, , complete broadcasting followed in 1965. ministry of information , broadcasting owned , maintained audio-visual apparatus—including television channel doordarshan—in country prior economic reforms of 1991. government of india played significant role in using audio-visual media increasing mass education in india s rural swathes. projected television screens provided engaging education in india s villages 1990s. in 1997, autonomous body established in name of prasar bharti take care of public service broadcasting under prasar bharti act. india radio , doordarshan, earlier working media units under ministry of i&b became constituents of body.


following economic reforms satellite television channels around world—including bbc, cnn, cnbc, , other foreign television channels gained foothold in country. 47 million household television sets emerged in 1993, year when rupert murdoch entered indian market. satellite , cable television gained foothold. doordarshan, in turn, initiated reforms , modernisation. 1,400 television stations of 2009, country ranks 4th in list of countries number of television broadcast stations.


on 16 november 2006, government of india released community radio policy allowed agricultural centres, educational institutions , civil society organisations apply community based fm broadcasting licence. community radio allowed 100 watt effective radiated power (erp) maximum tower height of 30 metres. licence valid 5 years , 1 organisation can 1 licence, non-transferable , used community development purposes.
