bambara active in 1960s black arts movement , emergence of black feminism. anthology black woman (1970), poetry, short stories, , essays nikki giovanni, audre lorde, alice walker, paule marshall , herself, work bambara s students seek program, first feminist collection focus on african-american women. tales , stories black folk (1971) contained work langston hughes, ernest j. gaines, pearl crayton, alice walker , students. wrote introduction groundbreaking feminist anthology women of color, bridge called (1981), edited gloria anzaldúa , cherríe moraga. while bambara described feminist, in chapter entitled on issue of roles , writes: perhaps need let go of notions of manhood , femininity , concentrate on blackhood.

her novel salt eaters (1980) centers on healing event coincides community festival in fictional city of claybourne, georgia. in novel, minor characters use blend of modern medical techniques alongside traditional folk medicines , remedies central character, velma, heal after suicide attempt. through struggle of velma , other characters surrounding her, bambara chronicles deep psychological toll african american political , community organizers can suffer, women. 


after publication , success of salt eaters, focused on film , television production throughout 1980s. 1980 1988, produced @ least 1 film per year.  bambara wrote script louis massiah s film bombing of osage avenue, dealt massive police assault in philadelphia on headquarters of black liberation group move, @ 6221 osage avenue, on may 13, 1985. film won 2 awards , success, viewed @ film festivals , airing on national public broadcasting channels.


the novel bones not child (or if blessings come - title of manuscript) published posthumously in 1999. deals disappearance , murder of 40 black children in atlanta between 1979 , 1981. called masterpiece toni morrison, edited , gathered of bambara s short stories, essays, , interviews in volume deep sightings & rescue missions: fiction, essays & conversations (vintage, 1996).
