frederiksberg gardens established king frederik iv in connection construction of frederiksberg palace new summer retreat on high grounds atop valby hill. work on project began in last half of 1690s inspiration italy , france frederick, @ time still crown prince, had visited on several occasions. commissioned eminent swedish architect nicodemus tessin draw proposal , final plan subsequently made hans heinrich scheel, captain in corps of royal engineers.

the plan involved parterre complex system of cascades on sloping terrain in front of new palace. fed complicated inefficient system of pumps never came work properly.


in end, johan cornelius krieger, @ time working on extension , adaption of fredensborg palace, north of copenhagen, called upon redesign parterre. unusually of time, gave parterre , instead transformed slope series of terraces.
