qualifying
the great lake relay open runners , walkers, both male , female, of age, ability , nation. safety reasons however, event limited first 450 teams complete entry form, , pay entry fee.
the athletics new zealand 100 km championships, , new zealand 100 mile ultra runners road championships have been incorporated event in years.
grades
teams or individuals may choose participate in 1 of following 5 grades.
runners: running teams consist of 10-18 members. each team member must run 1 or 2 legs.
walkers:walking teams consist of 10-18 members must walk 1 or 2 legs.
composite teams (runners , walkers):composite teams consist of 10-18 members must complete 1 or 2 legs each. legs 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 15 & 16 must completed walkers. team members may walk or run legs 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 & 18.
two person team (2x50km):both members of team must complete 50 km of relay course, consecutively. course starts 5 km fifth leg.
individual (100 km):competitors must current members of athletics nz eligible nz championship title. each individual competitor must start 5 km fifth leg, , complete 100 km of course 6.00pm of race day.
start time
the relay uses staggered wave start beginning @ 9:00 pm friday night walkers have estimated team time greater 18 hrs. @ 10:30 pm, walkers estimate finish in less 18 hrs, along composite teams estimated team time of more 17 hrs 30 mins begin. rest of composite teams commence race @ 11:30 pm.
the first batch of runners starts @ 2:00 am saturday morning. these running teams have estimated team time greater 14hrs. final wave starts @ 3:00 am. includes rest of running teams, individuals , 2 person teams.

the race organizers keep standard time clock entries, though official timekeeping ceases after 6.00pm on saturday.
