yasmin akhter 14 year old domestic in dhaka. returning hometown in dashmile area in dinajpur on 24 august 1995. offered lift members of bangladesh police in police van. raped , killed 3 members of bangladesh police.


reaction

on 25 august 1995, manoranjan shill gopal, local member of parliament had informed matiur rahman editor of local newspaper, daily uttarbangla, police had raped , killed girl. rahman learned identity of victim on 26 august , wanted publish news article warned police not to. @ night police cut electric supply news office. rahman borrowed electricity of neighbor , used publish news. following publication of news mass protest erupted. local police station attacked , looted. curfew declared in area. police fired on protesters killing 17 , injuring 100 people.


trial , legacy

three police officers accused in case. 2 of police officers arrested in 1997. tried , found guilty. sentenced death in 2004. amrita lal, accused arrested years after verdict. trial process had faced resistance police refused register case. government under pressure women rights activist , civil society. convicts executed. 24 august marked resistance day against repression of women in bangladesh.
