grantham town hall 1867–69



royal albert orphanage, henwick, worcester. 1868. building cost £5,000 , contract won watkins in open competition. funds raised construction of permanent premises institution, donation of £4,000 being received local mp alderman richard padmore, , legacy of £1,000 in 1866 mr edward wheeler. site obtained on henwick road, worcester, , competition held designs new building. plans put forward william watkins , samuel dutton walker chosen.
grantham town hall, grantham. 1867–69. work watkins in italianate/ jacobethan revival style stone dressing , florid corinthian columns surmounted clock tower giving heavy , ungainly appearance. guildhall, designed, made of 3 separate buildings – main building, housed ballroom , courtroom (or session s hall); governor s residence , gaol 18 men , women on 2 floors. work carried out mr wartnaby, of little gonerby, £7,260. in 1991 redesigned sleaford architect tim benton , re-opened council owned guildhall arts centre @ cost of £1.2 million.
the market hall, corn exchange , fish market, doncaster. market hall of 1847–48 h. j. butterfield. corn exchange added @ right angles building watkins in 1870. corn exchange has advanced central , side bays projecting stonework corners, acting plinths clasping) corner pilasters , adjacent engaged red sandstone columns first floor. balustrade front has plinth inscribed wm cotterill clark mayor 1873

constitutional club, on corner of broadgate silver street, lincoln 1895. domed circular vestibule @ corner , enriched terracotta work presumably ruabon.
county assembly rooms, bailgate, lincoln. 1914. watkins added new facade building venetian window set in gable above entrance. building contains fine interior dating 1745

peacock , willson s bank, 190-1, high street lincoln. 1897. (now jack wills). building important example of flemishgothic revival style , watkins finest work. watkins provided drawings used fashion elaborate terracotta mouldings provided doulton , company, production plant @ rowley regis in west midlands. restored original appearances @ street level in 1992.
hsbc, high street lincoln, 1893. formerly lincoln , lindsey bank, later midland bank, earlier building occupied hepworths clothiers. watkins left upper part of building untouched, exterior walls , ground , first floors removed , stone facade , strongroooms inserted. new banking hall has impressive ceiling elizabethan style strap-work decoration , coats of arms of lincolnshire boroughs. building extended between 1923 , 1926.
sleaford. midland bank (now hsbc) built in 1903, designed william watkins , son, in stone faced jacobethan/renaissance revival style shaped gables , oriel windows. ground floor entrance @ corner of westgate southgate street has heavily moulded entrance corner tower above , ground floor windows set between columns.
lloyd s bank, northgate, sleaford 1905. baroque revival. formerly peacock willson & co bank established in 1792 in house built in 1702 robert alvey. watkins , son extended building in matching architectural style north of original building adjacent sleaford sessions house.the new building technically advanced, heated low pressure hot water electric lighting throughout. 9 foot diameter glass dome in centre of banking chamber fitted patent air extractor.

305/6 high street, lincoln. 1900, designed hewitt brown & co. (now fat face). brick terracotta dressings-terracotta dressings made hathern station brick co. of loughborough. flemish renaissance revival style. giant pilasters, @ angles domed finials, enriched moulded cornice , coped gable. 4 storeys plus attics, 3 bays. windows have terracotta mullions , transoms. fascia full width glazed panel above it.

above, window flanked single bow windows, , above gable has 4-light ogee-headed window blind arcade , latticed round-headed opening in gable peak, flanked pilasters domed finials.
216 high street lincoln. 1902. shop c. j. fox , co. has been demolished , site of primark.

restoration work

greyfriars, free school lane (formerly city , county museum). watkins converted undercroft of franciscan friary museum in 1909.
the high bridge, lincoln. 16th-century jettied timber framed shops on bridge partly dismantled , re-erected watkins in 1900–01.

st botolph, high street, lincoln. nave , north aisle 1861, henry goddard. chancel rebuilt in 1878, , south aisle , south chapel added 1884 william watkins. dressed stone , ashlar slate roof.

christ s hospital school girls, lincoln. 1893 , extended in 1911.this particularly fine example of romanesque revival architecture in united kingdom after 1974 building became part of lincoln school of art. built in red brick ruabon terracotta ornamentation.
st peter in eastgate primary school, eastgate, lincoln. further school built on site watkins in 1881 later combined earlier school of 1851 william adams nicholson
spring hill national school, hungate, lincoln. 1910. school buildings converted ropery housing development.

willoughby hall, ancaster, 1876. house designed in 1873 watkins f. w. allix. in jacobethan style shaped gables , showing french renaissance. house completed 1875 @ estimated cost of £28,000. estate sold in 1912 , again in 1928 sale particulars show had lofty hall 4 main reception rooms elaborate carved fireplaces, smoking room, broad staircase leading first floor 8 main bedrooms , 9 bedrooms on second floor. during world war ii occupied army , used bombing practice raf. destroyed dynamite in 1963. stable block, dated 1876 survives , converted house in 2010.
st nicholas parsonage, newport, lincoln 1879. arts , crafts. built rev f.b.blenkin £1950 plus £100 architect s commission.
