the u.s. navy funded of rov technology development in 1960s named cable-controlled underwater recovery vehicle (curv). created capability perform deep-sea rescue operation , recover objects ocean floor, such nuclear bomb lost in mediterranean sea after 1966 palomares b-52 crash. building on technology base; offshore oil & gas industry created work-class rovs assist in development of offshore oil fields. more decade after first introduced, rovs became essential in 1980s when of new offshore development exceeded reach of human divers. during mid-1980s marine rov industry suffered serious stagnation in technological development caused in part drop in price of oil , global economic recession. since then, technological development in rov industry has accelerated , today rovs perform numerous tasks in many fields. tasks range simple inspection of subsea structures, pipelines, , platforms, connecting pipelines , placing underwater manifolds. used extensively both in initial construction of sub-sea development , subsequent repair , maintenance.


submersible rovs have been used locate many historic shipwrecks, including rms titanic, bismarck, uss yorktown, , ss central america. in cases, such titanic , ss central america, rovs have been used recover material sea floor , bring surface.


while oil , gas industry uses majority of rovs, other applications include science, military, , salvage. military uses rov tasks such mine clearing , inspection. science usage discussed below.
