the draw group stage held in monaco on 27 august 2015. 32 teams drawn 8 groups of four, restriction teams same association not drawn against each other. draw, teams seeded 4 pots based on following principles (introduced starting season):

pot 1 contained title holders , champions of top 7 associations based on 2014 uefa country coefficients. title holders (barcelona) 1 of champions of top 7 associations, champions of association ranked eighth seeded pot 1 (regulations article 13.05).
pot 2, 3 , 4 contained remaining teams, seeded based on 2015 uefa club coefficients.

in each group, teams played against each other home-and-away in round-robin format. group winners , runners-up advanced round of 16, while third-placed teams entered 2015–16 uefa europa league round of 32. matchdays 15–16 september, 29–30 september, 20–21 october, 3–4 november, 24–25 november, , 8–9 december 2015.

the youth teams of clubs qualified group stage played in 2015–16 uefa youth league on same matchdays, competed in uefa champions league path (with uefa youth league expanded 64 teams, youth domestic champions of top 32 associations compete in separate domestic champions path until play-offs).

a total of 17 national associations represented in group stage. astana, borussia mönchengladbach , gent made debut appearances in group stage. astana first team kazakhstan play in champions league group stage. maximum teams same association in group stage increased 4 five, spain became first association have 5 teams in champions league group stage. since 3 qualifying teams highest ranked leagues won ties in league route playoff round, 3 countries of spain, england , germany had 13 of 32 clubs in group stage.
